I’ve been on a running kick lately. Okay, maybe not really a kick because the number of days I’ve been home far exceeds the number of times I’ve actually run-- but let’s just call it a running kick anyways.
Thus far all the times I’ve been are at night. It’s weird but I really do love running in the dark. My body seems to be nocturnal and is stubborn if I try to push it at any other time of the day. Yesterday I tried to run around 4 and literally couldn’t make it down the driveway. I have a long driveway-- but not that long. Tonight I waited till 7:30 and ran till 9. Okay, second confession. I wasn’t running that entire time because I had to take a pit stop to salsa dance in the middle of the fairway for a full 3 minutes and 42 seconds. Though I was a little self-conscious at first, because as we all know, my dancing is and always has been awful-- I soon realized it was pitch black outside and good games were on TV, so people were preoccupied.
Tonight was the perfect winter night. It was freezing but the moon was huge and the stars were out. It was literally breathtaking. I chased the moon for a while but unfortunately couldn’t continue forever that way. I ran on the golf course where it was wide open and I could see every step I took like it was broad daylight. The familiarty of this run is such that I could do it with my eyes closed and I felt my legs delving the vastness. All this was without interruption. I could run down the middle of the fairway without having to worry about getting hit by a golf ball. I could stop and barrel roll down one of the tee-box hills. I could scream and twirl and nobody would notice. My feats were limitless and that’s always a good feeling; to have no boundaries weighing you down.
My sister told me about these people that are training for a 100 mile marathon. Don’t roll your eyes in disbelief-- it’s true. It’s a different type of marathon then race as fast as you can till you’re exhausted. It’s a little more casual; a little more enjoy this while you experience it. They wake up early Sunday mornings and run for three hours. They take a few breaks to reenergize but they love it. I have big hopes that one day over break I will wake up and do it. Watch the sunrise and just run till my knees wobble—in a good way. The marathon is then a day long event where people set up tents around a take and you run till you need to stop kind of thing. I'm very interested...any takers? Lace up and join my running kick.
