Recently, I was having a conversation with the Cultural Director of the Ace Hotel about imperfection. About how in today’s world perfection is so easily obtained that it has ceased to be interesting. It reminded me, in a way, of the rise of abstract expressionism. Creating picture perfect paintings became commonplace, so artists took it on themselves to reinterpret reality.
Our generation is facing a similar problem, that of brutal connectivity. Being plugged into the world, your peers, the unknown is so easy now that is seems like it is no longer an option or choice. How many of you took your smartphone to the bathroom today? Thought so.
The problem with connectivity is that it is a creativity killer. You won’t have your “oh shit” moment on Tumblr or while watching 30 Rock. I can almost guarantee you won’t. I don’t propose any romantic return to dialing home phones or sending a telegram, but I ask you to seek disconnection.
I have set “blackout” periods in my week. Times when I have no internet or phone, no connectivity. I bring my problems, ideas and pens and paper into these times and have been consistently happy with what has come out of them. Give it a try, unplug your internet and look out the window, you might be surprised what you find.
