even though I was warned of the dreary wintry weather of paris, I didn’t fully understand the extent of things. who needs vitamin supplements with a personality like mine, I thought. uhhh, I DO!!! with temperatures in the 20’s and precipitation rotating between snow, rain and sleet, it’s been difficult to not hit the snooze button until mid afternoon and that’s pretty depressing. thankfully I’ve phased out of that bad pattern and we had our first glimpse of sunshine in THREE WEEKS this past monday. I spent the entire day outside and it made me look forward to season change when I can do that all the time again. the temperatures have been significantly warmer/tolerable so I have resumed my nightly runs-- thinking of running in the paris marathon in april! last night I stumbled upon an intense zumba workout class and admit I stood outside the window fully participating in the class.
the cold wasn’t too bad the weekend it dumped snow. paris was beautiful covered in white and everybody was shocked by how much stuck. we spent a saturday walking around montmartre overlooking the entire city with all it’s snowy rooftops. the highlight was a snowball fight that lasted until 7 am on freshly fallen snow. sara and I dragged a leftover christmas tree to the top of annie’s stairs, much to her dismay-- best prank ever we thought. we are still finding needles everywhere.
there was a 24 hour period where I don’t think my body had ever experienced such delicious things-- butternut squash soup and an eggplant, mozzarella and tomato tartine (open-faced sandwich). there was a nutella on pizza crust combination and a cookie from my new favorite cafe that deserve to be mentioned. we also finally went to cafe de flore and had hot chocolate that can knock your socks off.
the french celebrate epiphany with a cake, galette des rois. the youngest person in the group gets under the table and randomly selects names to decide who gets which piece. they each come with a ceramic piece inside that is supposed to bring you good fortune in the year if you win. we did this with the girls and with friends at anne and vincent’s house. it was so fun! I won both times, though lucy cried really hard and I had to let her sleep with my boat under her pillow for a few days.
I rearranged my room pushing my bed against the wall and creating a little nook. this allows for a ton of natural light to reach me during the day but also makes life cozy and is what I’ve been missing from my room this whole time. putting some artwork on the wall has definitely makes it feel more like home and makes me excited to read and study. the girls have also loved my new additions and we’ve had movie afternoons a few times this week all snuggled under the covers. they also swept my room the other day while I was out and took about 17 dirty glasses downstairs. love my little cleaning service!
we celebrated lucy’s 7th birthday and josephine’s 4 1/2th since apparently those deserve presents too. sara and annie came over for lunch and were so sweet to bring flowers and delicious chocolatey treats. lucy got to pick her gift and wanted make up and has been having me give her tutorials all week. lucy is still my little bud and now wants everything I eat. our favorite lately are wraps with spinach, cucumbers, carrots, avacado, beets, goat cheese and balsamic. emile has grown up a ton and has actually become fond of me. when I go pick him up from school he excitedly sprints towards me which is a refreshing change from the screaming he used to do. yesterday was my second run in with the police. they came and found me in the bank because I’d left them in the car for the two minutes I went inside, even though marie does the same thing sometimes. and then josephine pointed and stared at the police man as we pulled away.
our weekends have been really good. we’ve been going to lots of museums and filling our days with as much as possible. I think we got a little nervous that time is running out and we don’t want to miss out on anything paris has to offer.
